STAGE TWO TRAINING
On appointment to an ST4 post, please re-register with the RCOA. This is a GMC requirement and is necessary even if you have already completed stage one training as part of a training programme and have been registered with college recently.
All trainees should be allocated an educational supervisor, usually by the College Tutor. Trainees should meet with their educational supervisor at the start of their placement and at three monthly intervals thereafter. A record of discussions should be documented on the LLP as supervisory meetings.
Trainees should aim to meet with the Training Programme Director to discuss career plans at suitable intervals throughout training. An invitation for an initial meeting will be sent within one month of joining the training programme.
Stage Two Training
During this two year period, you will be allocated to training hospitals within the Warwickshire School. Please see the guide to stage 2 training below, which will clarify what is expected of you to meet ARCP requirements during this stage of training.
A provisional plan for the entire stage of training will be made when you meet the training programme director shortly after starting the training programme. You will spend some time working in a tertiary centre and some time working at a district general hospital or other hospital trust within the school. Allocations are made based on the training needs of everyone in the training programme and you should be prepared to work at any of our hospitals. There is a second document below which describes the key capabilities available at each hospital within the training programme. You should use this to help plan, with your Educational Supervisor and College Tutor, which parts of the curriculum to focus on during each rotation in this stage of training.
Cardiothoracic Anaesthesia Subspecialty Training: This will be delivered during a placement at University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire. Some thoracic experience can also be gained while working at Birmingham Heartlands Hospital or other hospitals within UHB by prior arrangement with the college tutor.
Neuroanaesthesia Subspecialty Training: This will be delivered partially during a placement at University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire, and partially during a one-month secondment to University Hospitals Birmingham (Queen Elizabeth Hospital).
Paediatric Anaesthesia Subspecialty Training: This will be delivered during placements in trusts within the school which regularly deliver paediatric anaesthesia. All trainees will be offered a one-month secondment to Birmingham Children’s Hospital (BCH) during stage 2 training to experience tertiary paediatric anaesthesia. A longer (3 month) rotational placement is available at BCH for those with a subspeciality interest. This should be discussed when you meet the training programme director.
Obstetric Anaesthesia Subspecialty Training: This can be delivered at most hospitals within the rotation.
